Dieters Need More Calcium

Women on diets need more calcium than normal to avoid boneloss, say Rutgers University researchers.

Studies showed a weight loss diet of 1.5 pounds a week for 6weeks cuts absorption of calcium. In 57 postmenopausaldieters it was discovered that those women who took 1,800 mgof calcium a day absorbed 78 percent more calcium than thosewho took only 1,000 mg a day. To prevent bone loss, womendieting after menopause should get 1,700 mg of calcium aday, the experts say.

For people on low-fat, high fiber diets calcium requirementsare also higher. Studies show that 19 percent less calciumis absorbed. It is theorized that the healthier diet movesfood faster through the gastrointestinal tract.

While it is common knowledge that calcium is necessary forbone-growth research shows that calcium also fights fatabsorption. Studies reveal that calcium blocks fat storagein fat cells. A minimum of 1,000 mg. of calcium dailyimproves total cholesterol and good HDL, but lowers bad LDL.

A state of emergency has been recently put on European Union agenda. In the next ten years, European countries will be "on diet". The EU countries have to manage an alarming situation: high rate of obesity and overweight. It seems that all America's weight-loss problems along with diets and any kind of dieting pills crossed the Ocean.

According to new research from Texas A&M's Fruit and Vegetable Improvement Center, an ingredient in watermelon can lead to a spike in the body's levels of nitric oxide, which relaxes blood vessels and increases blood flow -- similar to the effects of the famous blue pill. Citrulline, the ingredient, is found mostly in the watermelon's rind and converts into the amino acid arginine, benefitting the circulatory system.


But, before you buy all the watermelons at your local grocery store, consider this: You'd need to eat about six cups of the fruit before you see -- or feel -- any effects. With watermelon being mainly made up of water, you'll probably spend a lot more time in the bathroom than in the bedroom.


That's no reason to give up on watermelon, though: It's still a diet-friendly treat for those hot summer days ahead of us. Plus, research shows that citrulline might prove helpful for people suffering from Type 2 diabetes. The ingredient can also be found in other fruits such as cantaloupes and cucumbers, but at much lower levels.
The average fish stick contains about 70 calories and 4 grams of fat. Fried, calorie content doubles while fat grams shoot out the roof, leaving that one tiny fish stick with more calories than a three-ounce serving of flounder. Keep in mind that we're not even counting the tartar sauce that fish sticks love to dip into.

Fish sticks tend to be a favorite for tiny tots and make a convenient and economical meal. However, most fish sticks consist of minced fish - the winnies of fish. And even though they appear to be economical on the surface, whiz by the fish market to do a bit of comparison pricing before latching onto that frozen box. If the market you shop tends to be pricey for fresh fish, search for one that's light on the pocketbook. A good fishmonger can be a dieter's - as well as a healthy family's best friend.

As to the flounder, prepare by placing on a piece of aluminum foil that has been sprayed with cooking spray. Sprinkle on your favorite herbs, a bit of salt and pepper and pop into a 375° oven until flounder flakes.

A three-ounce serving of flounder is equal to about one small fillet. Another diet plus? The fat is reduced to about 1.30 grams.

Good Carbs vs. Bad Carbs...



The word "carbs" is everywhere these days, and there are many diets which are either "for" carbs or "against" carbs.

The public is getting confused about all this confusion over carbs, and nobody seems to really understand what to do when dieting these days.

So we'll explain the simple truth about carbs and what it takes to begin losing weight immediately.

A "carb" is just a short hand way of saying "a carbohydrate".

A carbohydrate is a special type of calorie which contains extra energy, which is why you'll feel more energetic when eating foods which are rich in carbohydrates. For example, if you eat a bag of candy or a piece of cake then you'll feel very energetic afterwards, because these are foods which are rich in excess carbs.

The truth is that not all carbs are fattening, because there are different types of carbs -- there are "good carbs" and there are "bad carbs" too.

However, if you are overweight (or if you're one of those people who has been overweight since childhood) then it's 99% certain that your daily foods contain too many bad carbs -- and not enough good carbs.

Sugar is a type of bad carb, and most people think they know how to avoid sugar. But the truth is that sugar has MANY different forms which are very hard to spot in foods. ...And this is why you'll never lose weight until you learn to eat good carbs only.

For example, most people falsely believe that eating foods sweetened with honey are somehow healthier than eating foods sweetened with sugar --- but in reality honey is just as fattening as sugar. In fact, honey is filled with the same fattening carbs as sugar.

Why is this true?

This is true because honey (and other bad carbs) cause your blood sugar level to rise sharply after a meal (which is why you'll feel energetic after eating a honey based meal).

This causes you to gain weight because when your blood sugar rises then your body is forced to over-produce a hormone called "insulin" (because insulin is needed to help process excess blood sugar). ...And when your body produces too much insulin then fat storage will occur.

But if you eat good carbs (instead of bad carbs) then your blood sugar level will not skyrocket after each meal, and thus you can burn fat and lose weight much easier. Plus, you'll feel energetic all day on a more even level, without the "highs" and "lows" that most overweight people experience.
